Grant proposed for Local Hazard Mitigation Plan Program
By Clayton Kelley
On the agenda, DeWitt County Commissioners authorized Emergency Management Services to apply for the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan Program at the March 11 meeting.
The program allowed Emergency Management Services to receive a $100,000 grant from the Texas General Land Office in order to help bring the county’s mitigation plan in line with Federal Emergency Management Agency and state requirements to ensure compliance.
“This is a great opportunity,” EMS Coordinator Billy Jordan said. “A hazard mitigation plan looks at the community’s vulnerabilities and highlights them. Working through this process, you develop action plans from mitigating hazards like biological or terroristic threats. This can also assist with families that have been through disasters like floods and flood prevention. A lot of people are doing green space, creating these ecosystems knowing that an area could potentially be flooded.”
Other items on the agenda included:
• A certificate of compliance for Desirae Poth-Garibay from the County Treasurer’s Association of Texas was given for successfully completing the required hours of investment training approved by CTA for the two-year period fully satisfying the education requirements for County Treasurers.
• The county renewed a HVAC service and maintenance agreement with Victoria Air Conditioning for the DeWitt County Annex.
• A proposal for new postage machines from Pitney Bowes was approved for the courthouse.
• A permit application from Burlington Resources Oil and Gas Company LP for the installation of a temporary water line along H. Koopman Road was approved. Burlington Resources Oil and Gas Company LP also made permit requests for the installation of a temporary water line along A. Metting Road, and Lincke Road and Kubala Store Road.
