Gunnar Frank, Axel Rojo advance to county spelling bee on Feb. 1

Students from Yoakum Intermediate and Yoakum Junior High recently participated in the Scripps Spelling Bee. Students competed for a chance to advance to the Countylevel spelling bee in Cuero on Feb. 1.

The top two spellers from Yoakum ISD get to advance to County in Cuero for a chance to advance to Regionals in Victoria. The top speller at Regionals will receive an all-expense paid trip to compete at the national level in Washington D.C.

This year’s Yoakum ISD winners are 8th grader Gunnar Frank, who won first place and 5th grader Axel Rojo, who won second place. The alternate was 5th grader Sophia Barcenas. 7th grader Benito Olmedo placed fourth.

Since 1925, children across America have participated in classroom, school, and regional spelling bees with the hope of making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. By inspiring the exploration of words, the Scripps National Spelling Bee illuminates pathways to lifelong curiosity, celebrates academic achievement, and enriches communities.

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the program. Congratulations to everyone that competed.
