Lions Club hosts Pivo and Kolaches run

The Shiner Lions Club hosted its 4th annual Pivo and Kolaches .5K run this past Saturday.
“The event involved the .5K as well as live music,” Lions Club Vice President Sara Giddings said. “Damon Curtis performed before the race and, afterwards, the Lederhosen Junkies played.
The race itself involves multiple stops for the participants to get them moving and energetic and have a good time. It started out with everyone hula hooping three times and there was a stop that involved a bean-bag toss cornhole as well as beer pong. Eating the kolaches along the stops was also a big part of it.”
There were three winners in the race: first place Susan Giddings, second place Scott Giddings and third place Morgan Love.
Last to finish the race was Candice Springfield.
Nan Darilek was the winner of the costume contest.
“This year, people really took the fun element in as it wasn’t nearly as competitive as it has been in the past,” Giddings said. “The whole idea is to have a good time.”
There were about 110 people who participated in the race itself.
“There were also extra people there that hung out and listened to the music,” Giddings said. “We always have people who say that if they knew the race was that easy, they’d do it next year.”
This event was entirely organized by the Shiner Lions Club.
“We worked to come up with a t-shirt design and the participant stickers,” Giddings said. “We also came up with the course design. We also did all of our advertising for this.”
Funds raised from this event have already been designated for projects around Shiner.
“We are launching a new project to re-do the tennis courts in town,” Giddings said. “That’ll be approximately $70,000 and the money we raised this year will go toward the campaign for this. We also raised money for other activities we do in the community like helping our senior citizens. We want to put this money back in the community.”
The Lions Club will be holding this event next year as well.
“I would encourage everyone to come,” Giddings said. “It’s a great gathering of people enjoying kolaches and beer. It’s a fun, relaxed event.”
Giddings said there were many people from out of the county that came to this event.
