M+14 Cookoff was huge success

The Meisetschleager family held its annual M+14 cookoff at the Moulton City Park on Oct. 14.

The event raised about $17,800 in scholarships and gave out 13 scholarships already this past year for $16,000 total.

“With the way the economy is right now, we’re very very pleased with the way things have turned out,” organizer Kristen Jahn said.

This was the second year the Meisetschleager family put this together without both of their parents around as Jahn’s mom passed away a couple of years ago.

“Their spirit was alive and well there,” Jahn said. “Waking up yesterday and this morning and seeing everyone tag our benefit on Facebook and mention how great it was and that they had a wonderful time and it was for a good cause. This just reinforces the fact that we are out there for a wonderful cause and we are very proud that we are able to give back to the community just like our mom and dad did for years.”

There were 38 teams that just cooked all of the three meats. On the cookoff for the meats only, M+14 paid off a total of $3,150 and, of that, $1,375 was donated back. For the jackpot entries, the event paid off $1,584 and $654.40 was donated back. The jackpot entries included bean, chili, and Bloody Mary’s.

“As far as cookers go, we had about the same amount of cookers from last year; however, we had more entries in our beans and chili jackpot categories this year than last,” Jahn said.

The Reserve Champion at M+14 was for the team “Just One More” which consisted of Cody and Shelby Jalufka. The Grand Champion was for the team “F.U.B.K” and that consisted of Brandon and Ashley Janecek and Josh Nance.

The benefit also held a silent auction and made $8,350 out of 97 silent auction items.
