MISD looks to buy a bus, or maybe just two...
Moulton ISD is in the process of buying a couple of buses.
The board reviewed a couple of purchase options at its meeting Wednesday, Oct. 11. Board members were weighing either buying one travel bus or two gas-powered route buses. Ultimately, Moulton favored the two-bus option, so long as prices did not exceed $100,000.
The newest model they have in their bus fleet is a 2014 model. President Daniel Beyer appointed a committee to review and recommend any purchases at the November board meeting.
The school board also will be purchasing a 100-amp advanced radio system costing $17,817 that will help improve school safety and security.
“We have tested our radio systems and we found that we have some dead spots,” Superintendent Renee Fairchild said. “If we are going to make sure that we have radio access in the case of a safety incident, we are recommending the purchase of this radio system. This is the same radio system that school districts around us have and we will be able to communicate directly with our police department and other Lavaca County first responders. This also enables us to possibly put radios on our buses in the future.”
The radio system will include 16 new radios and the funds will come from the safety and security money Moulton ISD received from the state.
The board also approved a School Health Advisory Committee recommendation titled Watch UR Bac Awareness program which is a drug and alcohol awareness program that will teach students in K-12th grade the importance of avoiding drugs and alcohol.
Moulton ISD will also have new medications available for those who need it.
"Schools are now required to have epi-pens and Narcan available on campus. These are what they call off-script medications,” Fairchild said. “They do have to be signed off by a physician and parents have to be notified that the medications are here at school available for use if needed. TEA requires the board adopts this policy and notifications to parents. Narcan comes in a two-dose package that can be used if needed. There will be an adult dose and a child dose on hand.”
The district currently has one open position for Secondary Science at the high school. Principals will attend a job fair at Texas State University in hopes of filling it.
“Setting up a table at the Texas State Job fair will allow us to tell about the amazing things happening in Moulton ISD and possibly attract future talent to join our team,” Fairchild said. “This job fair will give us access to December graduates. We will have a table, signage, and a few branding items to distribute to possible teacher candidates.”
Other items on the agenda included:
• Ronald Braeuer, Melvin Janak, and Amy Kloesel have been nominated to the Lavaca County Appraisal Board. These names will be placed on a ballot for the open positions.
• The trustees have appointed Chuck Greive to fill the vacant Place 4 Board of Trustees seat. He was selected to fill the unexpired term vacated by Nan Pilat. Greive will be sworn in at the November Board meeting.
