National 4-H Week Oct.2-8

The DeWitt County Commissioners’ Court opted to join municipalities nationwide in officially recognizing the first full week of October as National 4-H Week at their Sept. 12 meeting.

County Extension Agent Anthony Netardus thanked the commissioners for their continued support of the development program that served 298 local youth ranging from third graders  through 18-year-old young adults.

“Since 1968, we’ve been supporting National 4-H Week to promote 4-H in our county and thank people who support 4-H. We do that the first full week of October; this year will be Oct. 2 through Oct. 8…,” said Netardus Sept. 12.  “On behalf of the Agrilife Extension of DeWitt County,  myself, my coworker Denise Goebel and my secretary Pam Ficklen, and all the 4-H leaders of the County, we want to thank DeWitt County and the Commissioners Court for their support of our office and our 4-H program,”

Following the Sept. 26 Commissioners’ Court meeting, County Judge Daryl Fowler said 4-H offers local children unique learning and personal growth opportunities. He said the court recognizes the program's positive impact and increased funding to the salary portion of the extension office budget for the new fiscal year.

“The value added to our community is almost unquantifiable. Growing up in a big city, I didn’t have the benefit of having that in my curriculum,” said Fowler. “Watching the young kids from here get into (the program) and learn the four H’s…  it’s an incredible thing to watch and very moving. They get skills that don’t come with any other curriculum. We want to support it as much as we can.”
