National Library Week, April 3-9
National Library Week is fast approaching and will be celebrated April 3-9 both locally and nationwide. Show your library some LOVE and come by to check out all of the services offered at absolutely NO cost. This year’s theme is “Connect with Your Library” to encourage everyone to visit the library and explore the many opportunities.
The special week was first observed in 1958 when Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions, and musical instruments. While times have changed, it now seems it is video games and streaming services taking over. Get away from the screen and enjoy everything you are able to engage in at your local library!
This includes public access computers (desktop and laptops); mobile hotspots; 24 hour a day wi-fi services; wireless printing, in-house check out of board and card games; 3D pens; Osmo learning systems; many educational resources and learning manipulatives; books in print, audio, and digital (eBooks); take and make kits, online databases for education, recipes, genealogical research, the latest news, and language learning for all ages; special sections designed within the library for specific age groups to make everyone feel welcome, and so much more! Library staff is also working very strategically on plans for the upcoming Dinosaur Exhibit/Traveling Museum,. Tom Tom Parade, Summer Programs, and many more projects. The possibilities at the library are endless and include FANTASTIC OPPORTUNTIES to enjoy a “special jewel” in your very own town.
April 5 is National Library Workers Day and is celebrated during National Library Week each year to recognize the individuals that share their expertise and commitment to transforming the lives and communities through various methods to encourage lifelong learning. Do you know any library workers that play a critical role in meeting your needs and/or the needs of your community? This could be a school librarian, church librarian, public librarian— someone in a library setting that has touched your life in one way or another that you would like to recognize.
To show appreciation for library workers and the services they provide throughout the year, members of the community are invited to “Submit a STAR” by providing a testimonial about a favorite library professional of yours. Patrons are welcome to share stories on how libraries/library workers have made an impact on their lives and/or their community. START showing your appreciation today by using this link https:// ala-apa.org/nlwd/?page_id=209 to submit your star library worker!
The City of Yoakum Mayor Carl O’Neill proclaims the week of April 3-9, as National Library Week and encourages all citizens of Yoakum and the surrounding areas served, to visit the library during this special week and enjoy the many benefits it has to offer. He further calls upon everyone to recognize the hard work, dedication, and expertise put in by your library staff. Please thank your librarians throughout this special week, as they work very diligently and dedicate many hours to ensure individual needs and the needs of the community are met through library services.
The Carl and Mary Welhausen Library opens you with welcome arms and encourages everyone to get a library card today! Each person checking out a book during this special week will be entered in a prize drawing that will take place throughout the week; winners will be contacted via telephone. With summer and other fun programs coming up, you do NOT want to miss out on everything planned.
It is going to be one of the best summers yet! If you do not have a library card, but would like one, staff encourages you to take a few minutes out of your day to come by and get one. It is free and requires a valid Texas driver’s license or identification and proof of address. Addresses must match; if they do not, two documents with your name and address on them are required such as: a utility bill, gas bill, bank statement, voter registration card, car insurance, etc. Please note out of county residents are subject to a small fee of $5 per month or $25 per year.
