Primary School dress code requires sneakers and tennis shoes
Yoakum Primary School’s dress code now requires students to wear sneakers or tennis shoes as footwear to maximize Physical Education (PE) class time for the 2022-2023 school year.
“The only thing that we changed (concerning the dress code) was requiring kids to wear tennis shoes because students were wearing boots and whatnot, and Then they were changing in the classroom, and it was taking time to go to PE, “ said Yoakum Primary School Principal Rebecca Fitch during the Aug. 8 Yoakum Independent School District (YISD) meeting. “They were having kids sit out because they weren’t wearing appropriate shoes, (for example): flip flops.”
This new policy would only impact first and second grade students for the upcoming school year. Yoakum Independent School District Superintendent Tom Kelley said that PE classes are a vital part of the curriculum for students.
“It’s part of the core curriculum to have PE,” said Kelley after the meeting. “That’s why we want our students dressed appropriately to actively participate in class.”
