Sacred Heart High School senior headed to MIT

Laura Varela was named the Historian of the Sacred Heart Catholic High S chool class of 2025.
In addition of her receiving the honor, Laura’s extraordina r y accomplishments has also allowed her to be accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, and the University of Texas at t Austin’s McCombs School of Business, some of the most selective and prestigious institutions in the country.
Her acceptance into these elite universities places her among the top academic achievers in the nation and is not only a reflection of her talent, but also of the consistent effort and discipline she has shown throughout her academic career.
At Sacred Heart, Laura made the most of every opportunity, with some of her most notable activities including serving as drum major her senior year, placing in the state band competition all four years, and ranking among the top five in the state as an oratory speaker, among others.
Laura’s accomplishments, both academic and extracurricular, have shaped her into a well-rounded student skilled in various areas.
Her journey has been shaped by a lifelong Catholic education, which has grounded her in faith and integrity.
Moving between different cities throughout her childhood gave her certain multicultural and bilingual skills and a broad and thoughtful perspective, one that inspires her to create positive change in the world while staying true to her roots.
Laura credits her family for being a constant source of support and inspiration. She extends heartfelt thanks to her parents, Daniel Varela and Laura Mena, and to her siblings, Daniela and Rafael, who have been with her from the beginning and have played a vital role in shaping the person she is today.
This fall, Laura will attend MIT in Boston, Massachusetts, where she plans to major in Business.
At MIT, she hopes to use her education to make a meaningful difference, while never losing her essence, her values, her faith in God, and her passion to lead with purpose.
