School board allows Superintendent to look for replacement

By Clayton Kelley

The Moulton Independent School District Superintendent Renee Fairchild will be resigning effective at the end of April.

The district has released a statement on this matter.

“The MISD Board of Trustees and Dr. Renee Fairchild have amicably decided to transition to new school leadership,” the statement read. “Dr. Fairchild has honorably served as the MISD’s Superintendent of Schools since her arrival to the district in June of 2022. An agreement has been reached which allows Dr. Fairchild the ability to pursue other interests and permits the board to pursue hiring another superintendent. The board and Dr. Fairchild have entered into the agreement believing it is in their respective best interests and in the best interests of the district.”

“On March 1, Fairchild will assume the role of superintendent Emeritus, and in that capacity, she will be available to provide support and guidance to whomever the board names as her successor. Dr. Fairchild feels blessed to have been called to serve as superintendent and she is thankful for the support of students, parents, and staff. The board wishes Dr. Fairchild well in her future endeavors, and looks forward to a seamless transition in school leadership.”

Although Fairchild is still considered active superintendent, there was an interim Superintendent at the MISD school board meeting on Feb. 12.

The Interim Superintendent for the meeting is Bill Hefner.

“I am the interim superintendent and am currently filling all duties that are required as Superintendent,” Hefner said. “I took on this job as I knew there were some challenges facing the district and I chose to interview for the position. I felt that my previous work history will hopefully lend itself as a positive to the district. I was a teacher for six years in Columbus ISD and then worked the last 27 years in administration at Rice Consolidated as a principal, CFO, and superintendent. I plan to serve MISD in all areas to the best of my ability. The district is a great place but we are facing some extreme financial challenges. We will work together to solve these problems. I am excited to be here and have the opportunity.”

Other items on the MISD school board agenda include:

• Board members approved the Texas Association of School Board Risk Fund Contract for the 2025-26 school year. This is a renewal and it has shifted $20 upwards a year for the contract.

• Board members tabled a resolution moving designated funds to undesignated.

• An updated fuel agreement was discussed.

• Board members approved an expense that is above the $10,000 threshold for the district.

• Enrollment numbers showed there were 170 students in elementary school and 121 in high school.
