School recognized by Healthy South Texas

The Moulton Elementary was recognized at the Monday’s Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court for being the first and only school in the county to be named a Healthy South Texas Campus.

Lavaca County Family and Community Health extension agent, Natalie Knesek informed the court about the designation that was awarded.

Knesek said the designation is part of the Healthy South Texas Initiative in collaboration with the Lavaca County office of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

“In order for the school to achieve this recognition, they had to participate in a number of programs benefiting students, parents and staff that focus on improving health and wellness,” Knesek said.

Knesek presented a list of activities the students took part in to achieve the recognition.

Knesek said this past fall, the sixth grade students completed the six lesson series, Mindful Self, that was taught by herself and in the spring, the Moulton third grade teachers, Anita Drabek and Tiffany Janak, utilized the Learn Grow Eat Go curriculum that promotes healthy eating.

Knesek said the third grade students harvested lettuce, radishes, tomatoes and kohlrabi from the four raised beds they planted.

In addition, the entire elementary school participated in the Walk Across Texas over eight weeks of the Spring Walking League.

She said 156 students and six adults walked 7,200 miles during their Physical Ed. classes. Also, to achieve the recognition the school was required to offer a parent program.

“Myself along with the help from Healthy South Texas specialist, David Leal, we taught four lessons of ‘Cooking Well with Diabetes’ course,” Knesek said.

“Also, Moulton school counselor, Laura Kusak, was an integral part in every step of the school’s engagement. She took the initiative to reach out to us for programming, enlisting the teachers to be involved and scheduling the programs.

Her leadership led others to this recognition.”
