Shiner Fire Department Cookoff Champs

The Shiner Smokers claimed braggin’ rights at the 2022 Shiner Fire Department Cookoff and Car Show held last weekend in Green Dickson Park, when they took grand champion in the barbecue from 37 teams entered this year. The Shiner Smokers took second in brisket, first in pork spareribs and second in chicken. Team members are, from left, Dustin Petras, Braden Mikes, Russell Boedeker, Tyler Mikes, Fireman Chris Kalina, Greg Hybner and Anthony Verduchi. Reserve grand went to Justine Fortune and On Point Barbecue, seen here with Fireman Chris Kalina, who claimed first in brisket, second in ribs and fourth in chicken. HTX BBQ took third, with a sixth place in brisket, a third in ribs and first in chicken. According to Shiner Fire Chief Billy Petru, just five points separated the top three teams.
