Shiner Lions Club donates to DLSEC

DeWitt-Lavaca Special Education Cooperative (DLSEC) received about $3,000 from the Shiner Lions Club as part of their annual demonstration of support on Thursday, Sept. 8.

“The donated funds are appropriated for use for special events for the students, including activities such as the annual DLSEC RISE prom, Reel Fishin', and others,” stated a DLSEC release. “The sale of Autism Awareness shirts to students and staff across the member districts of DLSEC generates the funds included in this donation.”

DLSEC Director of Operations Meredith Hairell said this year marked the seventh year for the cooperative to receive the annual donation from Shiner’s Lions. DLSEC Executive Director Jason Appelt gathered with Mrs. Thiry's class for the donation presentation.

The donation was funded by proceeds from Autism Awareness T-shirt sales in March, said Shiner Lions Club member Meagan Moore.

“(DLSEC’s) program services my son and many children like him. So, I have met them and have been unofficially part of their group for seven years now…” said Moore. “I really wanted to bring awareness to Autism in our community since it is a smaller community so these children can be more accepted in the schools and the public. And also to be able to bring awareness to parents who have children that might be struggling to seek out testing, early childhood intervention and things like that.”
