Sunday night search of theft subjects turns up empty
An overnight search of theft subjects in an area around Scherer Kubota turned up empty this past Sunday night.
According to a Facebook post from the Lavaca County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (LCOEMHS), the agency released a County Code Red alert for residences living in the area near Scherer Kubota and the Hallettsville Airport at 10:53 p.m. Sunday night.
The report said the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office was conducting a search for two male subjects, who attempted to steal equipment from Scherer Kubota.
The Code Red alert said the two subjects were last seen on foot headed into a wooded area adjacent to the property.
After an exhaustive search for several hours into early Sunday, using drone surveillance and tracking dogs from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Cuero, of the area, it was determined that the subjects had been picked up by a third party and left the area.
A second Code Red alert was released around 3 a.m. Sunday morning with this message saying there is no continued threat to the area.
The message said the LCSO would continue patrolling the area throughout the day on Monday.
The Code Red was only sent out to county residences in a circled area around Scherer Kubota that included an area covering Highway 77 South to FM 531. It also took in an area toward Mont on FM 318 as well as part of CR 1 and FM 2616.
The LCOEMHS said not everyone received the message and Lavaca County Code Red is an opt-in system.
Lavaca County emergency management coordinator, Greg Murrile said county residents need to register in order to receive messages from Lavaca County Code Red.
“You can register by going to the Lavaca County Website and selecting the Lavaca County OEMHS from the county offices menu,” Murrile said. “You will then see Code Red Sign Up Button on that page and can register there.”
