Tax-free weekend is Aug. 11 - 13

The annual tax-free weekend is scheduled to start next weekend Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13.

During this weekend, shoppers can get a variety of back-to-school necessities with the tax exemption applying to purchases made both in-stores, online and through catalogs.

Texas comptroller, Glenn Hegar, encourages taxpayers to show support for Texas businesses while enjoying savings on tax free purchases made during the weekend.

Clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks, priced below $100, are eligible for tax exemption during the Aug. 11 through 13 weekend.

The tax exemption applies only to items that qualify and are purchased during the sales tax holiday.

Anything purchased before or after the designated period do not qualify for the exemption, and there won’t be any tax refunds available for such transactions.

Items that qualify include clothing, footwear and more with each item priced under $100 eligible for the exemption.

Also there is no set limit in the number of items that qualify that you can buy. An example for purchase includes, if you purchase two shirts and each are priced at $80 then both shirts qualify for the exemption, even though the total purchase price is $160.

As long as each item individually meets the price criteria, it is eligible for the tax-free benefit.

In addition, school supplies can also be purchased without a tax charge as long as the specific school supplies are priced for less than $100 and qualify for the tax exemption.
