YISD preliminary test results indicate ‘excellent scores’

Preliminary 2022 STAAR and EOC results indicate that Yoakum ISD students improved on their overall passing rate from last year, continuing the trend of annual performance improvements.

YISD Superintendent Tom Kelley reported the preliminary results during the June 13 YISD School Board meeting.

Though he was quick to express his pride in students, staff and parents, Kelley emphasized that the results were preliminary and did not yet encompass all of the results.

“It’s a very challenging test, and we’re still fighting the effects of the pandemic when our students got so far behind,” said Kelley of the standardized assessments. “It just shows what a great job we’ve done to close the gap of the learning loss due to the pandemic.”

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Chad Rothbauer estimated that the final assessment results should be accessible with comparisons to state and regional averages by the July meeting. He said that parents should receive the scores by late June to early July.

The early results indicate improvements relative to last year’s scores, where students scored higher than the state average on 19 of 22 assessments, according to a July 21, 2021 report from Kelly in the Yoakum Herald-Times.

“It makes me very proud, and it’s rewarding for our teachers, students and parents… " Kelley said. “Preliminary – just looking at that – (these are) excellent scores.”
