YISD shows 5-year growth

TEA ratings improve since pandemic

The Texas Education Administration (TEA) 2021-2022 accountability ratings displayed improvements for Yoakum ISD (YISD) since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a five-year positive trending overall score.

The district received an overall rating of a B and an accompanying score of 88, a stark increase from 82 in 2018-2019 and 76 in 2017-2018. YISD staff discussed the improved ratings and emphasized the difficulty of long-term growth over five-years riddled with unprecedented complications during the Sept. 12 School Board meeting.

“Over the course of the past five years, there has been a lot of improvement with COVID going on and everybody dealing with different (adversity),” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Chad Rothbauer.

Yoakum High School received a total score of 83, up from 78 for the 2018-2019 school year and 72 the year prior, according to txschools.gov.

Yoakum Junior High’s score jumped to 82 from 74 and 67 in 2018-2019 and 2017-2018 respectively.

Yoakum Intermediate School (YIS) tied for the district’s highest school rating with a 94, up from 83 in 2018-2019 and 89 for the 2017-2018 year.  Yoakum Primary School was paired with YIS and received the same scores.

Yoakum Primary Annex rounded out the 2021-202 scores with an A rating and a 94 score; no previous ratings were listed.

“I can’t say how proud I am of our teachers, kids, community and parents. I know we’ve never had this many distinctions before for our student performance on the STAAR test,” said Superintendent Tom Kelley.  “The great thing is the growth and improvement we’ve made and the distinctions we’ve received at high, junior, and intermediate schools.”
