Yoakum Bulldogs gets first district win

The Yoakum Bulldogs hosted the Hempstead Bobcats on Oct. 27 and were victorious 35-0 giving them their first district win of the season. The Bulldogs built a 21-0 halftime lead highlighted by two touchdowns by Zach Taylor, one rushing and one passing, along with an 88-yard punt return touchdown by Trae Cuellar.

Taylor led the passing attack with 178 yards and two touchdowns to Ryder Harris and X'Zavier Barnett. On the ground, Ty Gordon paced the Bulldogs with 37 yards. Barnett led the receivers with 73 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by Gordon and Barnett who were responsible for six and five solo tackles respectively. Drake Deel recovered a fumble with 3:05 remaining in the game that led to a TyJuan Garza 1-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs the final margin of victory 35-0.

The Bulldogs will travel to Hallettsville on Nov. 3 to finish the district schedule with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. This will renew the annual Lavaca County Showdown and also have playoff seeding implications with the third and fourth seeds up for grabs. The Bulldogs will clinch the third seed with a win and with a loss the Bulldogs will fall to the fourth seed.
