Yoakum partners with GLO for grant work
This month, the city of Yoakum will complete work on the first of five grants in partnership with the General Land Office (GLO) of Texas.
Over the next five years, additional funding through GLO will contribute as much as an additional $25 million to the city’s infrastructure.
“I am blessed to be a part of a great team of employees, engineers, grant experts and a city council working together through project funding, design, and construction of these projects,” city manager Kevin Coleman said. “Each one of us has a key role in making that happen.”
These projects will set the stage to serve the city’s next generation of residents.
“No other City our size has been given this type of funding to invest in its community,” Coleman said. “We are all committed to doing whatever it takes to bring these projects home.”
The first grant, a Disaster Recovery grant, focuses on improving City systems that suffered during Hurricane Harvey.
Projects include a backup power generator at the Fire Department; improvements to the city water and waste water and electric communication system; increased capacity to the Kennedy drainage ditch; improvements to the City’s electric system and pavement improves at the wastewater treatment plant. The GLO provided a total of $1.8 million dollars to the city for the projects. City contribution to the projects will be less than $200,000
“Though we pray that we never see another event like Harvey, these projects will be key assets in our response if one comes our way,” Coleman said.
