Lavaca County’s ban on outdoor burning will remain in place for another two weeks, commissioners decided Monday.

Local emergency management coordinator Egon Barthels said he visited with all the county’s fire chiefs the days before, and nearly all said it would be prudent to keep the burn ban in place.

Between the crazy winds of the last few days and the abundant fuel on the ground from last spring’s heavy rains, fire conditions remain high, those chiefs agreed.

Commissioners responded with an extension of the burn ban until they meet again in two weeks on Monday, April 25.

  • Because of record fuel prices, Lavaca. County went out for bids to secure additional facilities approved for road topping materials, including both coated and uncoated Grades 3 and 4 surface rock. The companies awarded were Brauntex Materials and Colorado Materials.
  • Commissioners approved two changes to the Lavaca County Child Welfare Board, including the naming of Kimberly Wilson as the board’s president and Darla Sanders as a new board member.
  • Lavaca County commissioners accepted a rebate from last year’s TexBuy contracts used. The rebate was in the amount of $405.11.
  • Barring the county auditor’s report,  which was pulled for further discussion at the next meeting, commissioners unanimously approved 13 of the 14-item consent agenda.
