A convoy of vintage sedans cruised through Lavaca County and surrounding areas for the 52nd Annual Poor Boy Model A Tour hosted by The Greater Houston Region Model A Restorers Club on April 2.
The drive began in Hallettsville before the pack of 1930s era Ford vehicles moseyed through Yoakum, Shiner, Moulton, and other nearby communities. This year marked the fifth time in the event’s history the vintage car fanatics gathered in Hallettsville as their launching point.
The tour is unique among similar events because participating drivers were encouraged to leave the pack to explore the towns they passed and no registration fees were collected- thus the “Poor Boy” title.
Bob Pond of the Greater Houston A’s reported 44 vehicles joined this year’s tour, which was the triumphant return of the event since pandemic-related concerns halted tours in 2020 and 2021. Several drivers tagged along in modern vehicles to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere alongside the Model A cars.
“The weather was great and the people were nice and encouraged us to shop around and look around. It was just really pleasant and laid back,” said Pond. “I like to drive out there where you have a lot of little hills, little windy roads... when you get up a little bit higher you can still see all across the country.”
Overall, Pond reported the tour was a success and shared he was really impressed with the rural roads and southern hospitality displayed in the communities.
