Fallen vets honored in Green Dickson Park

While flags flapped rapidly at half-mast from the strong Monday morning wind, dozens of locals paid their respects to fallen U.S Military personnel for the Memorial Day Tribute at the Veterans War Memorial.

Many locals gathered in the park with their families and lawn chairs for the annual event hosted by the Shiner Chamber of Commerce at Shiner’s Green Dickson Park. Shiner Native Major Matt Machacek spoke about the holiday’s significance and highlighted local veterans who died while serving their country.

“(The annual Memorial Day Tribute) is something I grew up seeing and it’s an honor to have the life experience to know a little bit about what these veterans gave for this nation,” said Machacek. “It’s very humbling for me to be here.”

During the tribute, thirteen local organizations placed a decorated wreath in front of the memorial to signify their respect and support for the fallen veterans.

“That is what makes Shiner the community that it is because we have the type of citizen here that supports our military,” Machacek said. “It’s always been strong and it means a lot to get to come out here to see that.”
