Hallettsville to have a three-candidate race for mayor

The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run for a positions on the Hallettsville ISD Board of Trustees and the Hallettsville City Council ended Friday, Feb. 17, and the city will have one contested race.
Hallettsville City secretary/administrator Grace Ward reported incumbent mayor Alice Jo Summers, Place 5 city council member Cindy Renken and Gordon Clark all filed for the mayor’s seat to make it a three-candidate race.
Besides the mayor’s chair for election, the Place 2 seat held by incumbent Aubrey Barrera will be uncontested as Barrera filed for re-election.
The position on city council, Place 5, which currently is held by Renken and with Renken filing for the mayor’s position, Billy Barrera has filed for the Place 5 seat.
Regarding the city election, early voting will take place from April 24 to May 2.
The general election is scheduled for Saturday, May 6.
Ward said Tuesday was the last day for file as a write-in candidate and the last day for a candidate to file for withdrawal is Friday, Feb. 24.
The Hallettsville Independent School District administrator’s office reported the terms of Place 6 (Robert Lundy) and Place 7 (Dennis Herring Jr.) are up for election.
According to the administrator’s office, Ryan C. Bludau filed for the Place 6 position with Lundy opting to not run for re-election.
Herring filed for the Place 7 chair and will have no opponent.
Due to HISD having no contested races, the board of trustees is expected to cancel its election.
The Lavaca Hospital District holds elections every other year and this year it will not be holding an election.
