Lavaca County Day at State Capitol
Lavaca County citizens will have the opportunity to tour the Texas State Capitol, visit with area representatives and observe the introduction of bills in the 88th Texas Legislature Monday, March 13 at Lavaca County Day at the Capitol.
Spearheaded by Lavaca County legislature chairman, Paul Yamarick, this is the first time Lavaca County Day will take place at the Capitol and will give those attending an opportunity to learn about our state government in action.
At the Monday, Feb. 27 Commissioners’ Court meeting, Yamarick detailed an itinerary for the day.
He asked county citizens, who are planning to attend to arrive at 8:30 a.m.
Suggested parking is at the Capitol visitors parking garage, located at 1201 San Jacinto Blvd. Those attending should allow 10 minutes to park and walk to the Capitol.
“Our district 30 representative, Genie Morrison, will have the Speaker of the House (Dade Phelan), recognize Lavaca County at 9 a.m.,” Yamarick said.
Yamarick said if county citizens can’t make it by 9 a.m. to try and be there by 10 a.m. when he has set up a guided tour of the Capitol building for the group.
Yamarick has room number E2. 1002 reserved in the Capitol from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Lavaca County citizens to gather and have lunch.
The lunch will cost around $10 per person.
During this time, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Representative Geanie Morrison, are planning to visit separately with the group.
After lunch the group will visit the representatives’ offices and staff.
Yamarick said he will also highlight and the citizens will able to visit any ongoing committees who are hearing bills that may be of interest.
“Locating places in the Capitol is very confusing. Do not hesitate to ask anyone for directions,” Yamarick said. “These are our representatives who work for the citizens of Lavaca County and the Great State of Texas and this is a great opportunity for you to meet your representatives and for them to hear from you.”
Yamarick said this is a day to be educated on the processes that take place in our State government and all Lavaca County citizens are invited to attend, regardless of political affiliation.
