Moulton girls in Honolulu for Pearl Harbor Day parade

As part of all-american Varsity Spirit cheer camp reward

They would call it the day they awoke the sleep giant, the day that a fearless swarm of Japanese warriors blackened out the sun over our most tropical of states to catch America completely unaware on an otherwise sleepy Sunday back in 1941.

It left much of our nation’s Pacific Fleet in utter shambles, unhealing holes in the hearts of so many who lost loved ones in the unprovoked attack that day, a day an unflinching President told so many stunned and hurting Americans would forever live on in infamy.

With those words immemorial, the USA, led by those who might one day be called the Greatest Generation, entered what many hoped would be the war to end all wars.

And today, at precisely 8 p.m. Central Standard Time, we will once again remember those many lives lost and celebrate those who, ever fewer with each passing calendar, still remember the smell of the dark smoke that filled the sky that fateful day and, whether they want to or not, still hear the sounds their shipmates made who went from safe aboard their battleships to buried alive behind those massive plate steel walls—who could ever forget that nightmarish, incessant tapping that went on for days?

And as we remember those lives lost and celebrate the few who remain, Moulton High School will be proudly among those represented in the Aloha State, as several local cheerleaders participate in this the 82nd anniversary of that infamous and fateful day.

They’ll be there to represent Moulton, the great State of Texas, and Americans everywhere as part of Varsity Spirit All-American Team, a global leader in cheerleading, dance team and band apparel, camps and competitions, and a division of Varsity Brands, the market leader in team sports, school spirit and achievement recognition, at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Honolulu, Hawaii, taking place Dec. 4-9.

Cheerleaders and dancers who are invited to perform in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade are part of a select group of All-Americans identified at Varsity Spirit summer camps across the country.

All-Americans are based on superior cheerleading or dance skills as well as leadership skills at camps operated by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), Universal Dance Association (UDA), National Cheerleaders Association (NCA), National Dance Alliance (NDA), United Spirit Association (USA) or Urban Cheerleading Experience (UCE).

Only the top 12% of the cheerleaders and dancers from Varsity Spirit camps earn the chance to participate in a performance of this caliber, and five of those girls are from Moulton this year, including Samantha Michael, Katie Richter, Abigail Siegel, Valeria Pinedo and Abygail Tinajero, along with Moulton cheer sponsor Tammy Machart.

“We are thrilled that these excellent athletes will have the chance to perform and experience our Special Events in Honolulu,” said Bill Seely, President of Varsity Spirit.

“We are honored to provide them a oneof-a-kind opportunity, where they will meet and connect with cheerleaders and dancers from across the country and create memorable experiences in the beautiful island of Oahu.”

The girls will perform with Varsity Spirit All-Americans in the parade before thousands of fans lining the streets of Waikiki Beach.

This trip marks the 82nd Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The parade theme is “remembering the past and celebrating our future.” We honor our veterans and their families while recognizing that once bitter enemies can become loyal friends and allies.

Besides being able to perform for true national heroes, athletes will have the opportunity to meet cheerleaders and dancers from across that nation.

They enjoy a traditional Hawaiian luau and a memorable trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship.

The Varsity Spirit All-American program is celebrating more than 30 years of honoring camp standouts.

Memphis-based Varsity Spirit, the driving force behind cheerleading’s dynamic transformation into the high-energy, athletic activity it is today, is the leading global source for all things spirit, including cheerleading, dance team and performing arts, impacting more than a million athletes each year.
