Lady Brahmas thrash Palacios to open district

The Hallettsville Lady Brahmas’ intensity on defense was too much for the Palacios Sharkettes.

Hallettsville (14-3, 0-1) forced 29 Palacios turnovers in a 57-39 victory here in the District 28- AAA opener here Friday night.

“This is the best we have played defense in a while,” coach Hunter Hlavaty said. “We were able to turn defense into offense.”

The onslaught began with a 23-8 blitz in the opening quarter which saw the Sharkettes turnover the ball 13 times and the LB shooting 58.8% from the field. Hallettsville led 10-5 prior to reeling ff 13 consecutive points on a threepointer by Alaina Halata and deuces by Layten Kolacny, Adalyn Pohl, Macy Herring and Kasey Harper.

Hallettsville’s offense slowed down in the second period and the Sharkettes went on a 7-2 run to whittle the margin to 25-15. However, the Lady Brahmas ended the quarter by scoring 10 unanswered points with Kolacny hitting 4 for a 36-15 halftime lead.

Three players were in double figures led by 13 points apiece by Kolacny and Harper. Halata added 10 points.

Palacios (12-4, 0-1) was led by Maddy Wollam’s 16 points.

According to reliable sources, it wasn’t a good night for referees in the Lady Brahmas’ 53-52 loss to Skidmore-Tynan on the road Tuesday, December 5.

Hallettsville trailed 42-34 going into the final eight minutes, but despite a 18-11 period, Hallettsville could not catch up.

Adalyn Pohl scored 16 points, and Destiny Garza 11 and Macy Herring 10.

Maggy Moreman was the thorn in the side of Lady Brahmas with 20 points including four threes for the Bobcats (10-5).
