Lady Brahmas victors over Columbus

    The Hallettsville Lady Brahmas have never beaten Columbus during coach Hunter Hlavaty’s tenure.

    Friday night in the HHS Gym, the Lady Brahmas (22-4, 4-1) held off the defending district champion Lady Cardinals, 53-47.

    The LB had what seemed to be a safe 45-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.

    But Columbus (16-6, 3-2) started the fourth with a 11-2 surge to whittle the lead to 49-45. Layten Kolacny broke the scoring drought with a lay up after her steal. Ava Hoffley hit a deuce for Columbus and Alaina Halata’s lay up with 1:52 to play was the final points of the game.

    The game, which was played before an almost capacity crowd, saw Hallettsville shoot 36.8% from the field with 17 turnovers. Columbus shot 41.4%, but committed 22 turnovers. Hallettsville scored 10 points off Lady Cardinals miscues.

    Columbus shot 70% in the first period en route to a 17-11 lead. The LB got 9 points from Macy Herring in the second quarter and took a 28-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

    Halata opened the third period with a three-pointer. Columbus replied with a trey by Anaya Gardner and two free throws by Karlee Mathis. Hallettsville then went on a 12-0 run which was led by two threes by Halata and took a 45-34 advantage into the final eight minutes.

    Herring had a gamehigh 22 points with 10 of 17 shooting from the floor. Halata finished with 17 points. Columbus had three players in double figures led by Gardner’s 13 points. Mathis scored 11 points and was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

    LB 43, Yoakum 25

    The Lady Brahmas took a 43-25 road win over Yoakum Tuesday, Jan. 2.

    The LB had a good 14-2 start in the first quarter behind five points by Alaina Halata.

    The lead was increased to 25-8 at the half.

    Macy Herring was the high scorer for the game with 11 points and Adalyn Pohl scored 10 with a three and 5 of 16 from the foul line.
