Brahmas get much-needed victory

A loss to Columbus here Friday night would have put the Hallettsville Brahmas in dire straits.

But the Brahmas managed a 63-56 double overtime victory over the Cardinals in a 25-AAA game for their first district victory.

The score was tied at 49- all after the first overtime and 53-53 in the second before the Brahmas starting distancing themselves with a 6-0 run. The Cardinals got within three points (59- 56) prior to a driving lay up by Nathan Henke and two Dougie Mundine free throws for the final margin of victory.

“The boys battled all night long. We’ve been preaching all year, control what we can control and we did just that,” coach Brock Gerlich said. “Every time Columbus hit a big shot, our boys came right back with one of our own.

“It was a total team effort, and put us right back in the playoff mix. I am very proud of the team.”

After not scoring in the first half, Mundine tallied all of his game-high 19 counters in the second half.

The teams battled to an 11-11 standoff in the first quarter and the Brahmas led 18-17 at the half.

Two threes by Mundine in the third period aided Hallettsville in keeping the lead at 29-27 going into the fourth stanza.
