Kopecky shines in relief as Brahmas defeat Shiner, 9-3
Konnor Kopecky heated up an otherwise cold night with 3.1 innings of relief to help the Hallettsville Brahmas to a 9-3 victory over Shiner in the season opener for both teams here Monday
With the temperature hovering in the mid 50s Kopecky, a junior left-hander, retired all 10 batters he faced and struck our 7.
“Our pitchers were struggling to throw strikes,” coach Chad Gohlke said. “Kopecky came in and competed. Impressive first varsity outing.”
Shiner had just one hit - a RBI singled by Charlie Clifford in the first inning.
Tanner Cliffe was the starting pitcher and Andrew George was the winner in relief.
Shiner took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two walks and Clifford’s base hit.
The Comanches went up 3-0 with a two-run second inning that saw four walks and a hit by pitch.
The Brahmas pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second. Hudson Chenard walked and George singled. Preston Wagner, who was 3-for-3, doubled to right center to score both runs.
The Brahmas took a 4-3 advantage in the fourth inning. Tanner Wagner walked and Carter Blaha was hit by a pitch. Tanner Wagner scored on a infield out by Chenard and Blaha on a wild pitch.
The Brahmas increased the margin to 5-3 in the fifth. Tanner Wagner walked and scored on an infield error.
The Brahmas began pulling away with four runs in the sixth inning. The big blow was a tworun single by Tanner Wagner, Josh Griffin walked with the bases loaded and Luke Henneke scored on a passed ball.
