Local filings period ended on Feb. 16

bond elections set for city, isd but no contested races in hallettsville

The deadline for candidates filing to run for positions on the Hallettsville ISD Board of Trustees, the Hallettsville City Council and the Lavaca Hospital District Board of Directors ended this past Friday, Feb. 16 with each entity reporting candidates who have filed.

Hallettsville ISD reports that three places are up for election for the Board of Trustees that include Place 1 (Brian Smith), Place 2 (Holly Cliffe), and Place 3 (Marna Klimitchek).

According to the HISD administrator’s office, Smith and Cliffe are the only candidates to have filed for Place 1 and 2, respectively, while Sharesce Sidney is the only candidate filing for Place 3. Klimitchek has opted not to run for re-election.

Regarding positions on City Council, Hallettsville City Administrator/Secretary Grace Ward reported the positions for election include Place 1 (Chastity Grant Carter), Place 3 (Trent Skelton) and Place 4 (Dean Madden).

Ward said Carter, Skelton and Madden have all filed to run for re-election with no other candidates filing.

The Lavaca Medical Center administrator’s office reported there are four positions on the board who are up for election including Place 1 (Carl Hobbs), Place 5 (Gene Schott), Place 7 (Forrest Kroschel) and Place 3 (Ronnie Juenke).

The Place 3 position was vacated by John Allen, who resigned last October and Juenke was appointed to the position at the November 2023 meeting. The LMC administrative office reports that Hobbs, Schott, Kroschel and Juenke have filed for the election with no other candidates filing. With no contested races in the three entities, the respective boards/ council are expected to cancel candidate elections.

However, at a special called meeting on Monday, Feb. 12, Council approved a $6.0 million bond vote to be held that would involve repairing declining streets in the City.

In addition, the HISD Board of Trustees approved a bond vote at its Monday, Feb. 12 meeting. Particulars of the bond will be released in the near future.

Elections in the Hallettsville ISD and City of Hallettsville will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Lavaca County Annex Building. Early voting will be held starting April 22 through April 30.
