Raiders stymie Brahmas, 24-6
ALTAIR – The Rice Consolidated Raiders are for real.
Rice upped its record to 4-0 with a 24-6 victory over the Hallettsville Brahmas Friday night at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.
However, the Brahmas (2-2) did break the Raiders’ string of 15 quarters without giving up a point this season. Jesse Cavazos did that with a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
“We simply got beat by a better Rice team. The Rice defense hadn’t given up a point all season, and the reasons why were very evident Friday night,” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said. “Their defensive front is outstanding, and offensively, we could never gain traction and consistently move the ball.
“Having said that, we continue to make improvements on special teams and as a team overall. Offensively, I was fully aware that when you change an offense, it’s going to take some time. We will be okay,” Montgomery added.
The Brahmas held Rice’s balanced offense to 286 yards. The Brahmas totaled 226 yards and had only 166 yards until Cavazos’ scoring jaunt.
The Brahmas turned the ball over twice - once on a fumble and the other on an interception.
Brahma quarterback Mycole Pegoda generated 133 yards total offense. Pegoda rushed 14 times for 90 yards and completed 7 of 22 passes for 43 yards.
Wide out Preston Wagner had 3 receptions for 23 yards and Jack Amsden, Chaseton Ford, Kason Podhajsky and Cavazos had one reception apiece.
Wyatt Kram punted 3 times for a 38.0 average, the longest being 52 yards. Gus Weiser had one kickoff return for 12 yards.
