Franklin defeats Brahmas for the third year in a row

WALLER – The outcome of the HallettsvilleFranklin bi-district game was expected.

The Lions roared to a 48-6 victory in the 3A, Division I bi-district game at Waller ISD Stadium Thursday night.

The Franklin victory was the third in a row over the Brahmas, all three coming in the first round of the playoffs.

“They are simply the standard for AAA football programs in the state of Texas,” Brahma head coach Levi Montgomery said. “They played in the state championship game the last several years for a reason. A very talented team with a dominant running back that understands their system.

“Nonetheless, our kids most certainly competed with them. It was close at the beginning of the game, but eventually their depth took over,” Montgomery added.

Franklin (9-1) piled up 354 yards rushing and quarterback Noah Tart completed 1 pass in 7 attempts for 7 yards.

Lion fullback Jayden Jackson gained 162 yards on only 9 carries and scored on runs of 56 and 4 yards.

The Brahmas had just 226 yards total offense.

Brahma quarterback Mycole Pegoda was injured in the second quarter and never returned. Wyatt Kram filled in admirably for Pegoda and threw for 98 yards and rushed for 25 yards on 5 attempts.

On Franklin’s first possession, Jackson broke a 56-yard touchdown run but the extra point kick failed.

The Brahmas came back to score with 10:31 remaining in the second period on a one-yard plunge by Pegoda that capped a 67-yard, 12-play drive. The two-point conversion attempt failed leaving the score at 6-6.

The Lions came back and drove 61 yards in 6 plays with halfback Walker Anderson scoring on a 43-yard run.

The Lions scored again to up the score to 20-6 at the half.

The Brahmas left points on the field when they drove to the Franklin 6 before Ryan Smitherman’s interception spoiled the drive.

The Brahmas crossed midfield twice in the second half. They reached the Lion 21 before time expired.

Hallettsville (3-8) were penalized 8 times for 90 yards and 5 times for a false start. Franklin was assessed 3 penalties for 30 yards.
