Eagle Highlights of September to December
This week will be a review of the Eagle’s final four months of 2024 featuring September through December.
SEPTEMBER
Hallettsville native Drew Haas, along with his partner Drake Vilem, of Midland won the survivor title on the Netflix show “Outlast”. The two defeated 16 other teams in a survival of the fittest in the Alaskan wilderness… Long-time Sacred Heart Catholic Church pastor Msgr. John Peters retired after serving 30 years as the church’s leader. He also celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood… The Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court enacted the burn ban for the county. It was the second time this year for the burn ban being implemented … MHS students were presented their letterman jackets… The month turned out to be the driest month so far in the year with only 0.37 inches of rain falling during the month Daytime highs averaged nearly 95 degrees, while low averages came in at 72.
OCTOBER
The City of Moulton observed National Night Out… Citizens spoke out at the MISD board meeting voicing concerns over the new reading and language program… The Bobkittens Cross Country team of Kate Mikulencak, Mina Tinajero, Addison Simper, Katie Richter, Angeles Juarez and Estrella Perez, won the District 30 A championship. The Bobkatz placed fourth in district and were led by Bryan Colchado, who finished fourth overall in the boys division… Marlon Novosad was selected as Knight of the Month… After placing fourth at the regional meet, the Kittens qualified for the UIL State Cross Country meet. Karsyn Blahuta led the Bobkittens with a 19th place finish. Bryan Colchado was the only Bobkatz runner competing at regional and also qualified for the state meet… October topped last month in lack of rainfall zero amount falling throughout the 31 days and tying a 90-year record set in 1934. Highs averaged 92 degrees, while lows averaged 65.
NOVEMBER
The Moulton American Legion Post 392 welcomed Robert Nieto as its new commander… The Kittens placed 16th as a team at the UIL Class 1A Cross Country meet… Three MISD students, Torin Langston, Rebecca Ulcak and Addisyn Greibe attended the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, Indiana… MHS hosted a Veterans Day program with Kevin Kelly. U.S. Army serving as the guest speaker… The U.S. presidential election was held with Republican Donald Trump winning his second term… Commissioners’ Court voted to continue with a burn ban for the county… Moulton student Bailey Petrek won reserve grand champion overall of the bred and owned Red Brahman bulls at the World Brahman Congress… Former Hallettsville Brahma and Texas Longhorn running back Jonathon Brooks made his debut in the National Football League.…MISD board president Daniel Beyer announced that he would be stepping down from his role on the board… For the third month in a row, the area lacked rainfall with only 1.41 inches falling during November. Daytime highs averaged 81 degrees and lows averaged 57.
DECEMBER
The Bobkittens placed third at the Port Aransas tournament… After appearing in only three NFL games, Jonathon Brooks suffered a torn ACL causing him a setback in his football career… The Moulton Knights of Columbus Council 3244 celebrated its 75th anniversary… Margaret Kallus of Hallettsville was presented the Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society award… The Bobkittens captured the Victoria St. Joseph basketball tournament championship… After losing their first three games of the season, the Comanches reeled off 12 straight wins to advance to the UIL Class 2A Division II state championship game played at the Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington. In the game, the Comanches saw their quest for a state title end in the last 40 seconds losing to Muenster, 36-29… The Kittens went undefeated in their Katz/Kittens Klassic basketball tournament, while the Katz finished second in the boys division… The month saw a sparse amount of rain and temperatures remained spring-like with highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the mid-60’s.
