Haven’s American Dream: A Shiner FFA Legacy

In the proud agricultural town of Shiner,  one student has left a lasting mark on both her community and her school.
Haven Flores, a driven and passionate young woman became the first student in Shiner ISD history to receive the American FFA Degree—the highest honor awarded by the National FFA Organization.
Raised in a family deeply rooted in agriculture, Haven’s days were filled with caring for poultry, managing cattle, and raising swine. She didn’t just live the agricultural lifestyle—she embraced it.
Alongside her hands-on work, she found a creative outlet in photography, using her camera to tell the story of rural life through her own eyes.
Haven’s FFA journey began early, but it was during her sophomore year that things truly changed. That year, she began working under the guidance of her ag teacher and FFA advisor, Bruce Pohler. Mr. Pohler recognized Haven’s potential right away.
With his encouragement and support, she began to see what she was capable of—not just locally, but on a national scale. He pushed her to refine her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects, strengthen her leadership skills, and set her sights on long-term goals.
With his mentorship, Haven took on more responsibility, kept detailed records of her livestock work, and committed herself to the rigorous standards required for the American Degree.
Throughout her junior and senior years, Haven continued her FFA journey under Amberly Moye Sunvision, who helped her stay on track and supported her continued growth as a student and leader.
Achieving the American FFA Degree is no small feat. It represents years of dedication, leadership, and agricultural excellence. To earn it, members must meet strict requirements, including extensive SAE work hours, community service, and financial documentation.
Haven not only met these expectations—she exceeded them. Her accomplishments were made possible not only through her own determination, but also thanks to the unwavering support of her parents Pat and Tonette Flores and brother Eric Flores. Through every early morning chore and late-night study session, her family stood by her, encouraging her to keep going—even when things got tough.
In 2023, the National FFA Organization awarded approximately 4,423 American FFA Degrees—the highest honor achievable by an FFA member—to students across the country.
With a record-breaking 1,027,273 members across 9,235 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the FFA continues to expand its impact on agricultural education and leadership. Texas leads the nation with 177,401 members, making it a major contributor to national achievements.
The American FFA Degree is awarded to less than 1% of all members, making it a rare and prestigious accomplishment.
For students like Haven, receiving this award places them among the top FFA achievers in the country and highlights their exceptional dedication to the future of agriculture.
In October 2024, Haven was officially awarded the American FFA Degree at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t attend in person—she was deep into midterm finals at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where she’s continuing her education.
Still, the honor stands as a symbol of everything she poured into her FFA journey.
Haven’s remarkable journey to earning the American FFA Degree is a testament to her unwavering dedication, hard work, and passion for agriculture.
With the guidance of mentors like Bruce Pohler, the support of her family, and her own determination, Haven has not only achieved an incredible personal milestone but has also paved the way for future generations of FFA members in Shiner.
Her story will continue to inspire and remind us that with perseverance, every dream—no matter how big—can be realized.
