Moore wins big in VFW Patriotic Art Contest
John Moore, 18, of Shiner, recently won at the National Level of the 2024-2025 VFW 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest. He has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship for his first place submission.
John was also awarded a $500 scholarship from the Department of Texas as first place winner on the state level.
The title of his entry was “Essence of American Patriotism”. He was sponsored by Shiner VFW Post 6209.
The following is an excerpt from his essay/artist statement:
I created this design using multiple mediums, including clay and paint, which gives it a three-dimensional look that pops out at you. The combination of textures and color enhances the visual impact, making the eagle and the horse come to life in a way that captures the essence of American patriotism.
This approach allows viewers to engage with the artwork more deeply while appreciating the intricate details and craftsmanship that went into the piece. The use of various materials not only adds depth but also emphasizes the dynamic nature of the design and the spirit of freedom it represents.
I chose the design of an eagle dressed as Uncle Sam riding a horse while carrying a USA flag and scales of justice to represent a powerful fusion of patriotism, freedom, and the quest for justice. The eagle, a symbol of strength and courage, embodies the nation’s spirit and the ideals that the United States stands for.
By dressing the eagle as Uncle Sam, I emphasize the unique character of American identity and the responsibility that comes with it. The horse signifies movement, freedom, and the adventurous spirit of the American people.
Incorporating the scales of justice reinforces the importance of fairness and equality in society.
Together, these elements create a rich narrative that celebrates the interconnectedness of patriotism and justice, encouraging a dialogue about the ongoing responsibility we all share in upholding these ideals.
“First place in the nation! How amazing is that? I am beyond proud of John and the amazing pieces he has completed,” said John’s mom, Meagan Moore.
John attends Shiner ISD at the DLSEC Rise Campus in Yoakum.
