Alton Albert Michalcik
Alton Albert Michalcik, 84, of Hallettsville, went to his heavenly home on Monday, July 11, 2022 after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was definitely a fighter to the end.
He was born in Hallettsville on May 31, 1938, to Alfonse and Lillie Michalcik.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Alton attended school at Bila Hora thru eighth grade. He graduated from Hallettsville High School and completed six months of Active-Duty Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina for the United States Army.
Afterwards he started work at the Texas Highway Department in Port Lavaca for a couple of years and then began working for Shell Oil Company in Sheridan.
He then transferred to Karnes City to work at the Person Plant in Panna Maria and Pawnee Plant in Pawnee.
Alton was a member of the Karnes City Fire Department. He was a Cub Scout Leader for Pack 115 while living in Karnes City. He then was transferred back to Hallettsville to continue work at the Sheridan Plant where he retired after 30 years of service.
After retirement, he drove the bus at Hallettsville ISD for 10 years.
During this time, he married his high school sweetheart, Bernice Dorothy Smirak, on Nov. 19, 1961 at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home.
To this union three children were born.
Alton loved his family and friends. He especially loved the time spent with his wife. There was never a time that they were apart, they always did everything together. He always made sure everybody was taken care of before himself. He had a big heart. He loved his years as a bus driver being able to drive the students to many competitions/field trips. He was a farmer who took pride in his land and cattle. There was never a day that he wasn’t out on the mule feeding his cattle, turkeys, and fish. He loved fishing and hunting with his children and grandchildren.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. He was always there to give his grandchildren advice and even found time to teach his grandson to drive. There was never a time you wouldn’t find him watching those grandchildren at their sporting events/activities.
After his diagnosis of lung cancer two years ago, he had to slow down a bit but was still at home cheering on his grandchildren. During his illness he always looked forward to when his son, David, would come pick him up and take him hunting or just to the farm to see his cattle. He loved his outings with his son and even better when they stopped for ice cream.
Alton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice Michalcik; his sons, Wesley (Robyn) and David (Debra); daughter, Michele Chovanetz (Christopher). He is also survived by his brother, Glen (Barbara), and sister in-law, Jeanette Michalcik; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his brother, Ervin Michalcik, and nephew, Rodney Michalcik.
