Bruno R. Kohl

Bruno R. Kohl, 83, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024, in Temple, Texas after a brief illness.
Bruno was born on July 17, 1940 in Pommerndorf, Germany, to Albert and Anna (Appelt) Kohl. His family immigrated to the United States on October 13, 1951, and he lived with his grandmother Schafer on a farm that he would later purchase. Bruno attended Shiner public schools and was quite famous for the fun he had with his many friends. Bruno worked several jobs and always aspired to win in anything he did. This included dominoes, cards, pool, car races and pranks.
After graduating from Shiner High School on May 19,1959, he attended Victoria College and then transferred to The University of Texas at Austin. Bruno became a citizen on December 7, 1959, and married Bernice Kurtz on August 18, 1962. He graduated from UT with a BBA on May 25,1964 and was hired by National Cash Register (NCR) which moved him to Temple to assist in computerizing Kroger Grocery, McLane Company and Alico.
Bruno was transferred to NCR’s corporate headquarters in Dayton, Ohio, and upon his promotion to district manager, he relocated to Houston for the remainder of his career. After his tenure at NCR, he served as a consultant before retiring to spend his weekends tending to his land and cattle on his beloved farm in Shiner and enjoying his love of gardening. In 2013, Bruno and Bernice moved to Temple to assist with the upbringing of their three grandsons.
As an amazing grandfather who adored his grandsons, Bruno never missed a school or sporting event and was a mentor, tutor, chauffeur, chef, housekeeper and fan of Harrison, Grant and Blake Thomas. He shared his love of the ocean and fishing with them and through these and other journeys he gave them a small glimpse into his passion for being on the road.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Bernice Kohl; two daughters, Blaine Michelle Kohl and husband Brad Booth, and Belinda Kohl-Thomas and husband Scott Thomas; grandsons, Harrison, Grant and Blake Thomas; brother-in-law, Gregory Kurtz; niece, Joan Hopler; and nephew, Greg Miculka.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Helga Miculka.
Bruno’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 27, with a visitation from 1-3 p.m. and a service at 3 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home, 3110 Airport Road, Temple, TX, 76504.
