Harvey Alton Appelt

Harvey Alton Appelt, 85, passed away surrounded by family on Friday, March 1, 2024. 

 He was born in Lavaca County to Louis Jr. and Josephine (Haas) Appelt on Nov. 3, 1938.

Harvey graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1957 and the University of Texas at Austin in 1963.  He went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Education and counselor’s certificate from Prairie View A&M University.

On Dec. 28, 1963, Harvey married Helen Layton at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in  Hallettsville.  They celebrated 60 years of marriage. 

He was a devoted father of three daughters.  He was a car enthusiast and loved his convertibles. He enjoyed spending time on the farm with his longhorn cattle and German Shepherd dogs.

Harvey was a dedicated educator and school counselor for 46 years.  He began his teaching career in Westhoff and continued his passion for education at Industrial CISD and Hallettsville ISD.  After a brief retirement, he served as a guidance counselor at Moulton ISD and Sacred Heart Catholic School. He touched many young lives and inspired them to achieve greater accomplishments.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters, Sharon Appelt Timm and husband, Robert of Hallettsville and Alana Appelt McCarn and husband, Chris of The Woodlands; son-in-law, Horacio Carrizal, and four grandchildren, Reid Timm, Alexander Carrizal, Jacob Carrizal, and Claire Carrizal.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Tammy Appelt Carrizal.

Visitation began at 5 p.m., and the Rosary was recited at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 5 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. 

Funeral Mass service was celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Msgr. John Peters officiated.

Burial followed at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Hallettsville. 

 Pallbearers were  Reid Timm, Alexander Carrizal, Jacob Carrizal, Michael Haas, Randy Haas, Jeffery Layton, and Timothy Layton. 

 Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic School, Lavaca County Texas Exes Scholarship Fund, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
