Herbert Adkins
Herbert Wayne “Herbie” Adkins, 85, of Richmond passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Katy.
Herbie was born on November16, 1939 in Morrow, Louisiana, to Dorothea (Deshotel) and John Mitchell Adkins.
Herbie acquired a love of football at Nederland High School under the tutelage of Coach Bum Phillips. After high school, he attended Baylor University where in addition to his Business Degree and Law Degree, he earned many accolades on the grid iron.
Herbie was Baylor’s first-ever Southwest Conference/Fort Worth Kiwanis Club Sportsmanship Award winner as a junior and he earned consensus ALL-Southwest Conference recognition as a senior in 1961.
His shining moment came in the Gotham Bowl in 1961 against Utah State when Adkins “OWNED” All-American defensive tackle and future NFL standout Merlin Olsen. He was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
After college, he worked in California as a building manager for several years and then started a small oil drilling company out of Liberty, Texas until retiring in Shiner to raise cattle.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Adkins; nephew Barry Adkins and wife Karla; nieces, Kathy Moore and husband Chuck, and Jeanne Dorman; great nieces and nephews, Matthew Stauffacher, Rebecca Steinmetz and husband Dwaine, Michelle Hoke and husband Robert, and David Adkins and wife Kari-Ann; and six great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothea and John Adkins; sister, Sybil Dorman; and brother, Donald Adkins.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers are Barry Adkins, Chuck Moore, Matthew Stauffacher, David Adkins, Robert Hoke and Dwaine Steinmetz.
The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m. in the chapel of Davis Greenlawn in Rosenberg on Tuesday, November 4.
Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. John Lockhart officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
