Philip L. Hybner
Philip Louis Hybner was born August 23, 1926 in Shiner, Texas. He peacefully passed away at the age of 96 on November 30, 2022, in a Lufkin hospital with his children by his side.
Philip was born to Adolph and Frances (Kurtz) Hybner, both families having immigrated from Czechoslovakia in the 1800’s. Therefore, Philip started school unable to speak English. He was very proud of his heritage, so much so, that in the last moments of his life his children recognized him speaking his native language.
Philip grew up in Shiner and graduated from St. Ludmila’s Academy. He started attending Baldwin’s Business College in Yoakum. However, in January 1945 he was drafted into the Army where he was honorably discharged in August 1946. He returned to Baldwin’s and graduated in August 1947 which led to him being hired by the Southern Pacific Railroad in Victoria. In 1947 Philip met and married the love of his life, Grace Elizabeth Hagel on June 7, 1949. They had two children, Frances Ann and Philip Hybner, Jr.
The railroad transferred him to Houston where he later retired in February 1983. Later that year Philip and Grace moved to Bald Hill, Lufkin, Texas where they lived out life to the fullest. Philip traveled, danced, bowled, made wine, golfed, fished, shot pool, gardened, played an array of games, spent countless hours in his wood working shop, and his Bald Hill family even got him to hunt.
His favorite time in later years was playing 88 with his sisters, brother, Daniel, nieces, and nephews. He was a devout member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lufkin since 1964.
Philip Louis Hybner, (Popo), (G-Po), (Uncle Phil) will be known most by anyone that knew him for his Christ-like stewardship and love of family.
He is survived by a daughter, Frances Ann Lunsford of Nacogdoches; son, Philip L. Hybner, Jr. (Terri) of Tomball; grandchildren, Darlene Lunsford, Eric Hybner (Karen), Karen Dike (Adam), Sherilyn Walling (Chad) and Brian Hybner; great-grandchildren, Danny Lunsford (Alexandra), Britney Lunsford, Karly Warsing (Jared), Joseph Hybner (Angel), Samuel Hybner (Rebekah), Michael Hybner, Kaitlyn Dike, Evet Dike, Shelby Walling, Rachel Walling; 16 great-greatgrandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sisters, Lilly Matula, Annie Sofka, Mary Barcak Burton, Janie Swank Pickering, Martha Kocian Janota; and brothers, Felix Hybner, Victor Hybner, and Daniel Hybner.
