Area football: St. Paul plays last home game of 2022 regular season; Shiner has BIG game at Refugio
St. Paul plays its last regular-season home game while Shiner heads to Refugio for a game that will more than likely determine first and second place in the district.
Central Texas Christian at St. Paul
St. Paul hosts The Central Texas Christian Lions for the Cards second district game and the district opener for Central Texas Christian.
The Lions went 6-1 in non district, scoring over 21 point a game and limiting opposing teams to 19 points a game.
“They are having a very good year and have been solid the last few seasons, and got close to playing for a state championship. They will be tough,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said.
CTC is multiple on offense and will run out a lot of different formations, and has a solid running game that gets 219 yards a game (1533 total) and has scored 18 times, led by Reagan Ragsdale who has 883 yards, 126 yards a game and 10 touchdowns while Ethan Allerkamp has 482 yards and six touchdowns.
Quarterback Cooper Smith has gone 66-of108 for 638 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. Tristan Eanes has 228 receiving yards
“They are more run heavy this season. Reagan Ragsdale is going to get the ball alot. He is not particular big or small and does a good job of finding holes,” Wachsmuth said.
The Lions will come out in an eight-man front.
Ragsdale has paced the defense with 27 tackles, 51 assists, five tackles for loss and four sacks.
“We see this alignment on a regular basis. We just need to do what we do on offense well, The kids did well against Sacred Heart,” Wachsmuth said.
Shiner at Refugio
In what will be a pretty-anticipated matchup, Shiner will face Refugio in the regular season and district season for the first time since 2017. The Comanches and Bobcats have met in the playoffs in the last four consecutive seasons with those games split, two wins for each.
“They are going to be the fastest team on our schedule so far,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
After losing 49-12 to Hitchcock to open the season, Refugio has won six straight and is 3-0 in district.
Refugio’s offense is scoring around 44.7 points a game and the defense is yielding just 12 points a game.
Taking the snaps is Kelan Brown, sophomore, and the running game is led by Eziyah Bland and Jordan King. Bland’s receivers include Ernest Campbell, Chai Whitmire and Isaiah Avery.
The Bobcats offensive lineman average around 240 pounds.
“All the receivers are fast; the running backs are solid players,” Boedeker said. “Refugio has a lot of weapons.”
On the defensive side, King plays at either linebacker or on the line, and has made a lot of tackles.
Linemen Cadence Willis and Braylon Gonzales will also be a force to contend with. The linebacker corps also wield Zander Willis; Refugio also have plenty of speed in the secondary.
“Our offensive line will have to stay low and use our quickness. Both our lines will have to win the line of scrimmage as best they can,” Boedeker said.
