“Potential” is a big word meaning you are not worth a darn yet.
The Sacred Heart Indians won their first state championship since 2002 with a 7-3 win over the Dallas Baptist Saints in the finals May 10 at UT-Arlington.
“I thought early on this team was built to win, but it wasn’t going to be easy,” Indian head coach Mark Noska said. “We had to knock off an undefeated team in the semis and the top ranked team in the championship game.
“ I am extremely proud of these guys and how they battled through.”
Charlie Shank was the starting and winning pitcher in the title game and threw 5.1 innings. The right handed freshman gave up four hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out six and was named the MVP of the game.
Kellen Mechura worked an inning and a third and gave up a run.
Josh Terry got the final out in relief.
The Indians a fiverun third did the Saints in.
Layne Sevcik was hit by the pitch. After an out, Terry walked and Bowen Hawkins singled to load the bases. Another base on balls forced in Layne Sevcik. Hudson Kutac hit into a fielder’s choice to score Terry. Trent Sevcik walked to force in Terry. One run scored on a wild pitch and another on a passed ball.
Hawkins had a multihit game.
Indians 9, Knights 5
The Indians overcame four errors to beat the previously undefeated Bellville Academy Knights 9-5 in the semifinals Thursday afternoon.
Layne Sevcik was the starting and winning pitcher. He went five innings and gave up two runs, walked six while striking out six. He was named the MVP of the game.
Dillon Goedrich toiled a third of an inning and allowed two hits and three runs (two earned).
Charlie Shank pitched the final 1.2 innings and ceded two hits, walked one and fanned two.
The Knights committed seven errors which led to five unearned runs.
The Indians had seven hits to the Knights’ six.
The Indians led 5-0 after three innings.
In the first frame, the Tribe scored two runs without a hit.
In the second inning, two more runs scored.
Trent Sevcik led off with a single and scored when Dillon Goedrich was safe on an error. Goedrich scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
The Indians put across a run in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Josh Terry.
The score stayed 5-0 before Faith Academy tallied two runs in the fifth inning on two walks, a hit batsman and passed ball.
The Indians scored a run in the fifth inning to expand the lead to 6-2.
Trent Sevcik was hit by the pitch, Goedrich walked and Trent S evcik came across on a single by Layne Sevcik.
The Knights trimmed the lead to 6-5 with a three-run sixth.
But the Indians retaliated with three runs in the seventh inning.
Terry was hit by the pitch to begin the inning and went to second when Trent Ferry walked. Terry scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Sevcik and Goedrich knocked in two runs with a double.
The Indians had seven hits and the Knights six.
Faith Academy stranded 13 baserunners and the Indians eight.

Sacred Heart Indians advanced to the TAPPS Division IV state tournament with a 9-4 victory over Brazosport Christian School at Riverside Park Tuesday, April 29.
The Sevcik brothers - Layne and Trent - led the win.
Layne Sevcik was the starting and winning pitcher. He went six-plus innings, and he and reliever, Dillon Goedrich, allowed no hits.
Layne Sevcik struck out eight, walked five and hit a batter. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two RBI.
Trent Sevcik was 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in two runs.
Save base running errors, the score could have been worse.
The Indians scored a run in the top of the first inning.
Ty Noska was hit by a pitch, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Layne Sevcik.
The Eagles replied in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run.
The Indians made With one out, Hudson Kutac singled, stole second and came around on a base hit by Trent Sevcik. Goedrich walked and Trent Sevcik scored on a sacrifice fly by Noska. Emerson Harvey and Josh Terry ensued with run-scoring singles.
Trent Sevcik drove in a run with a single in the third inning.
The Eagles countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame on an error.
The Indians scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Sevcik has a lead off with a triple and scored on a bunt by Harvey.
The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh with both coming across on an error.
Goedrich had an RBI single in the fifth inning.

FAYETTEVILLE – Three hits were good enough in the Sacred Heart Indians’ 1 0 - 0 victory over Bryan St. Joseph in a TAPPS IV bi-district game Wednesday, April 23.
The Indians were the recipients of six bases on balls, six wild pitches, three errors and five hit batsmen in the five inning game.
Layne Sevcik gave up one hit, but walked five and hit two batters. He struck out eight.
The Indians scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jason Terry.
Three runs scored in the second inning on two walks, a wild pitch, an error and double by Layne Sevcik.
The Indians made it 5-0 in the third inning. Trent Ferry was hit by a pitch, stole second and stole home.
SH scored five runs in the fourth inning on no hits, an error, three hit batsmen and two walks.
