Flyers eke out 14-13 victory over Indians
A missed extra point was the difference in the Sacred Heart Indians’ 14- 13 loss here Friday night to Victoria St. Joseph.
The Indians (2-2) had a chance to go ahead in the fourth quarter before giving up the ball on the Flyer 25-yard line with 4:57 to play. The drive stalled after a delay-ofgame penalty.
The Flyers (3-1) were able to make three critical first downs to seal the victory.
“It’s always extremely tough when you come up short in a game you felt like you should’ve won,” Indian head coach Alex Seydler said. “ Our defense played really well and gave us a chance to win. Unfortunately, our offense struggled again to sustain drives and couldn’t generate enough points to pull out the victory.”
The score was tied at 7-all at the intermission.
The Indians scored first following a long 88-yard drive that took 8 plays.
A 10-yard run by quarterback Andrew Steffek on third down moved the chains to the Flyer 43. Steffek threw an 8-yard pass to Hudson Kutac to place the ball on the Flyer 31 from which point Steffek found Marcus Seger wide open in the flat and zeroed in on him for the touchdown with 30 seconds left in the period.
The Flyers drove to the Indian 17-yard line in the second quarter before the march was thwarted by linebacker Josh Terry’s fumble recovery.
The Flyers got on the scoreboard with 1:21 remaining in the second quarter on a 1- yard pass from quarterback Aiden Aragon to wide receiver Milo Abercrombie.
St. Joseph scored on its first possession of the second half.
A 27-yard pass to halfback Dedric Callis set up the score and Callis scored 3 plays later from the 2.
The Indians replied with a 53-yard, 8-play drive capped by Steffek’s 5-yard run, but the extra point was missed with 2:10 to go in the third period.
The Flyers made 15 first downs and the Indians 10.
