Indians advance to State Tournament
SUGAR LAND – Sacred Heart freshman pitcher Layne Sevcik is mature beyond his years.
Sevcik pitched a nohitter in leading the Indians to a 3-0 victory over Brazosport Christian in a state quarterfinal game at Constellation Field Friday. The win advanced the Indians to the TAPPS state tournament at UTArlington this week.
Sevcik walked three and had six strikeouts. He threw 91 pitches, 54 for strikes as the Indians played errorless defense behind him.
The Indians produced six hits with another freshman, Dillon Goedrich, going two-for-two
SH scored a run in the first inning. Sevcik led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Goedrich. Following a strikeout, Klayton Chance came up with a clutch two-out base hit to score Sevcik.
The Indians did not score again until the fifth inning with two runs came across.
Chance was safe on an error and Hudson Kutac singled. Chance stole home and Wade Shimek drove in Kutac with a fielder’s choice.
At one time Sevcik retired 11 in a row until a seventh inning walk.
