Indians Claim Another Victim in Northland Christian

The Sacred Heart Indians did not play their best game of the season, but won nonetheless took a 23-0 verdict over Houston Northland Christian School here Friday night.

They defeated Houston Northland Christian School, 23-0, here Friday night to move to 5-0 on the season.

The offense was stuck in grandma all night and gained a season-low 172 yards, but seized the opportunities they had on defense and scored 17 points after Northland turnovers.

Nic Angerstein had his fourth and fifth interceptions on the season and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Steffek and also kicked a 45-yard field goal.

The Cougars had 234 yards of offense and made 17 first downs to the Indians’ 9.

The Indians rushed for 120 yards with halfback Brady Haas gaining 105 tough yards on 19 carries.

Northland broke an Indian streak of three consecutive games without a turnover with an interception in the third quarter

Andrew Steffek completed 7 of 11 passes for 55 yards and threw for two touchdowns and scored one on a 3-yard run.

Northland flung the ball all over the place and quarterback Brody Butler completed 17 of 34 attempts for 102 yards, but the Cougars could not get the ball in the end zone.

Sacred Heart had its second goal line stand for the second game in a row to preserve its second consecutive shutout of the season. The Cougars had a first-and-goal at the Indian 5 in the waning minutes of the first half, but ended up giving the ball back at the 15 after losses of 1, 5 and 6 yards and an incomplete pass.

The Indians held a 17-0 lead and it looked like they were ready to run away and hide, but didn’t score again until the 10:20 mark of the fourth quarter.

SH went three-and-out on its first possession, but scored on the next after a fumble recovery by Cade Steffek on the Cougar 15. Two plays later, Angerstein caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Steffek and kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first period.

On its next possession, SH had excellent field position on its own 41. The Indians drove to the Cougar 30 before the drive bogged down and had to settle for a 45-yard Angerstein field goal for a 10-0 lead.

The Indians put together a 51-yard, 7-play drive for a second quarter touchdown.

Brady Haas had runs of 8 and 8 yards and Andrew Steffek passed to Angerstein for 7 and 25 yards, the latter carrying to the Cougar 3. Andrew Steffek scored on the next play with 6:09 to go in the first half for a 17-0 advantage.

The Indians managed only 3 first downs in the second half with one of them coming on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Steffek to Clayton Haas with 10:28 remaining in the game to cap a 7-play, 56-yard drive. The PAT attempt was blocked.
