Indians come back from 13-point deficit edge Flatonia, 21-20

FLATONIA–Trailing 20-7 at halftime, the Sacred Heart Indians looked lost at sea.

But the Indians showed a lot of grit and determination and rallied to take a 21-20 victory over Flatonia at Bulldog Stadium Friday night. Halfback Riley Haas scored on a 5-yard run with six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

“Overall, I’m just incredibly proud of our football team,” Indian head coach Alex Seydler said. “We had a tough first half, offensively we shot ourselves in the foot repeatedly, and defensively we allowed them to throw over the top for a couple of touchdowns. I felt our kids really came together at halftime and made the decision as a group that they weren’t going to be denied.”

The Bulldogs scored first on 25-yard pass from quarterback Beck Zimmerman to Keegan Green and Jose Maria Castro kicked the extra for a 7-0 lead with 9:30 left in the first point period. The Indians got on the scoreboard with 7:12 to go in the first quarter when Ty Noska blocked a punt and Kellen Mechura fell on the ball for a touchdown. Andrew Steffek booted the PAT to tie the score at 7-7. The Bulldogs upped the count to 20-7 on a 10-yard run by Caysen Perez. Garcia again kicked the extra point. After the Bulldogs scored again, this time on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Zimmerman to Green, the Indians blocked the all-important extra point and the score stayed 20-7. SH began its comeback with a third period score.

Halfback Clayton Haas went in from 11 yards out to end a 71-yard, 14-play drive and Hudson Kutac scored the 2-point conversion to trim the margin to 20-15.
