Indians gains tie for second
The Sacred Heart Indians overcame a barrage of three-pointers by Austin San Juan Diego Catholic and posted a 67- 60 victory in the SH Gym Saturday.
The win pulled the Indians into a second place tie with the Saints in TAPPS District 5 Division IV.
The Indians had to protect a 49-37 lead gaining into the fourth quarter. Deft three-point shooting by the Saints’ Mando Garcia closed the gap to 7 points, 61-54. The Indians regrouped and got clutch points from Andrew Steffek and Nic Angerstein down the stretch to fend off the Saints.
The Indians stepped all over themselves with 8 turnovers in the first period, but still had a 12-8 lead. Luckily, the Saints shot just 25% in the quarter.
The Saints (13-12, 3-2) got 5 treys from Aiden McCormick in the second period to grab a 25-22 halftime lead.
Hudson Kutac led a 27-point third quarter with 7 points and the Tribe took a 49-37 lead into the final eight minutes.
Andrew Steffek poured in a game-high 23 points, Kutac added 15 and Angerstein 11.
McCormick ended up with 17 points for the Saints and Garcia had 15.
The Indians (7-6, 3-2) shot 41.9% from the field and made 6 of 13 free throws. The Saints were 38.5% and made only 4 of 15 free throws.
