Indians lose in double OT

TEMPLE –The Sacred Heart Indians might have preferred losing 50-0 rather than in double overtime to Central Texas Christian Friday.

SH gave away the football on a fumble on its last possession to preserve a 26-20 victory for Temple Central Christian in a TAPPS District 5, Division IV.

The score was tied at 13-all going into overtime.

The Indians scored first in the initial overtime on a 7-yard run by halfback Riley Haas and the Lions replied with a 23-yard touchdown.

Clayton Jackson scored from one-yard out, but the two-point conversion failed leaving the score 26-20 before the Indians fumbled away their last chance.

“That was about as tough a loss as you can experience,” Indian head coach Alex Seydler said. “Our kids fought their guts out and left everything on the field for four quarters and two overtimes and didn’t get the result they deserved.

“ Defensively, we played extremely well with great effort, intensity, and toughness. Holding them to two scores over four quarters was quite an accomplishment. Unfortunately, our offense had the ball deep in their territory time and time again and couldn’t finish off drives with touchdowns. We shot ourselves in the foot with multiple turnovers and other errors. It’s extremely frustrating and disappointing. It was a game we should’ve won,” Seydler added.

The Lions scored first to open the game after a 70-yard, 9-play drive.

With 5:36 remaining in the first quarter, the Indians answered with quarterback Andrew Steffek tossing a 17-yard touchdown pass to split end Brennan Kaiser. Steffek added the point after to end a 5-play, 73- yard drive.

The Indians took a 13-7 lead at the intermission on a 6-yard touchdown run by halfback Riley Haas, but฀ the extra point attempt was blocked.

The Lions tied the game in the fourth quarter after a 90-yard drive that took only 7-plays. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
