Indians lose to O'Connell

BAY CITY – The Sacred Heart Indians suffered a tough loss to Galveston O’Connell Prep in the TAPPS Division IV regional finals Saturday.

The Buccaneers outscored the Indians 16-14 in the final period with Derrick Kirks and Jay Smith scoring 6 points, Meanwhile, the Indians missed three free throws in the final eight minutes.

O’Connell led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter before expanding the lead to 37-24 at the half.

The Indians started coming back with a 22-point third period led by Hudson Kutac’s 11 points and Klayton Chance’s seven to whittle the O’Connell lead to 49-46 going into the final eight minutes.

Kutac led the Indians with 21 points, Chance scored 14 and Andrew Steffek 11. Kirks led all scorers with 24 points for the Bucs.

Both teams shot 50% from the foul line. The Bucs made 10 of 20 while the Indians 5 of 10.

SH 54, Covenant 49

The area round victory over Conroe Covenant was a nail-biter at the end.

The Indians had a 50- 43 lead with two minutes left in the fourth quarter before the Cougars scored six unanswered points to cut the lead to 50-49. Andrew Steffek rose to the occasion and scored the final four Indian points.

The Indians garnered a 19-14 lead at the first break with Steffek scoring 8 points and Hudson Kutac 7.

The Cougars pulled even at the half, 28-28, behind Sean Adams’ 11 points.

Covenant captured a 37-35 advantage heading down the stretch.

Steffek scored a gamehigh 24 points and Kutac added 20 points. Both had two threes. Adams scored 20 points for the Cougars before fouling out with 2:51 remaining in the fourth period and Andrew Chandler 18.
