Jr. League baseball wins opening round game before losing next two

SWEENY – An opening round win did not translate into more success for the Hallettsville Jr. League All-Stars in the Section 4 Tournament.

Hallettsville run-ruled Brazoswood in five innings, 14-2, in the opener Sunday, June 2.

Gavyn Chapa struck out nine and allowed three hits - one a home run - and walked one.

Kale Mikes drove in the game’s first run with a single in the first inning.

Ben Meinkowsky singled in the second inning before scoring on a wild pitch.

Hallettsville started pulling away with a fiverun third inning. Jack Amsden and Ty Sklar walked both walked to lead off the frame. Chapa ensured with a run-scoring double prior to Sklar scoring on a balk.

Hallettsville scored its runs in the sixth and seventh innings

The locals did not score until the fifth inning when Luke Vrana and Ben Meinkowsky walked. Vrana stole home and Meinkowsky scored on Mason Grahmann’s single.

Jaden Garcia and Jack Amsden led off a two-run sixth inning with bases on balls. Amsden scored on a passed ball. Gavyn Chapa singled and later scored on an error.

Meinkowsky and Connor Jansky led off with walks. Meinkowsky scored on a fielder’s choice and Jansky on a single by Nathan Harvey

Vrana added a double.

R-F 14, H’ville 10

The 14-10 loss to Rockport-Fulton occurred in the weirdest of ways Friday.

With Hallettsville batting in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game was called because of the curfew but was not continued Saturday.

Hallettsville scored its first runs in the third inning with Mason Grahmann, Dylon Kolacny and Jack Amsden dented the plate after drawing walks.

Rockport-Fulton’s big inning was the fourth when eight runs crossed the plate for a 9-4 lead.

Amsden homered, Gavyn Chapa was 2-for3, Kale Mikes 2-for-2. Ty Sklar and Ben Meinkowsky singled.
